Men on testosterone, however, were less attracted to feminine women for long-term relationships than were men on the placebo. Deeper analyses revealed that there was no difference between men after receiving testosterone or the placebo when it came to rating the women for short-term attractiveness. Of course, the men had no idea which gel was being massaged into their backs (and neither did the researchers who applied the gel — this was a double-blind study). He and his colleagues massaged a wad of gel into the backs of their male volunteers (who said science wasn’t fun?). For example, men with high testosterone could be accustomed to winning at competitions, and expect attractive women to flock to them as a result. The average intra-assay coefficient of variation was 8.9 per cent and inter-assay coefficient was 10.3 per cent. Specimens were frozen and stored at −20°C and then assayed in duplicate using a competitive enzyme immunoassay for testosterone (Salimetrics LLC, State College, PA). To minimize variability due to diurnal fluctuations in circulating testosterone (Dabbs 1990), all experimental sessions took place between 12.30 and 16.00, and for the specimens collected for this experiment there were no significant associations between testosterone concentrations and specimen production times. Testosterone levels in the body should be moderated and when the body is unable to produce enough testosterone, the condition is referred to as hypogonadism. Since it is in high levels in men it attaches to the hair cells and stimulates the growth on the skin and especially on the face. The hormones encourage the growth and sustenance of male physiognomies. In adult males, healthy levels are important for general health, including disease risk and sexual function. During puberty in people assigned male at birth, testosterone is one of the main drivers of physical changes like muscle development, voice changes, and hair growth. The issue as to whether there is an association between testosterone and perceived masculinity still remains rather equivocal, potentially raising some questions about the validity of perceived masculinity measures to assess measured, structural facial sexual dimorphism. Moreover, the present study involved the collection of multiple specimens and statistical control for levels of blood contamination. All the men then rated a series of female faces for attractiveness. Half of the men received a testosterone gel, often used by men suffering from a testosterone deficiency. You have to dose men up on testosterone. The only way to be sure that testosterone has a direct effect on men’s mate preferences is to conduct a proper experiment. Perhaps men with high testosterone are different than men with low testosterone in some other way that explains their mate preferences. At the same time, facial femininity may also be related to characteristics men are less enamored of, such as unfaithfulness. That’s not me and also it’s this very white kind of normative version of masculinity as well and as a person of colour, that’s not going to emphasise my best qualities as a man of colour. I think taking T, my skin got oiler, so it’s more salicylic acid and glycogenic acid toners and stuff like that. I used to use a lot of different potions and stuff and have a six-step skincare regime, and now it’s gone down to four or five steps but I’m still doing a lot. Make the decision to fall in love with the process of loving yourself and not the ‘ideal beauty standards’ and you’ll spend the rest of your life fulfilled." General beauty standards can cause you to have dysphoria and being transgender making everything so much harder to navigate. While their experiences, as you will soon read, are different, their relationships to beauty have all been shaped by gender; both in terms of roles and expectations on a social level and their own experiences on a personal level, too. Embracing one’s appearance, regardless of where it falls on the spectrum of masculine and feminine traits, is crucial for self-acceptance and overall well-being. These modifications may include increased jawline definition, thicker facial hair, and broader cheekbones. This awareness can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for those undergoing hormone therapy and cosmetic procedures. These cultural standards significantly impact individuals’ decisions regarding hormone therapy and cosmetic procedures. Men might be perceived as attractive with less pronounced jawlines and more refined facial features, which contrasts with Western preferences. In many Western cultures, masculine faces are typically characterized by strong jawlines, prominent brow ridges, and broader facial structures. Raters were asked to rate each face on a 7-point Likert scale from 1 (not at all masculine/dominant) to 7 (very masculine/dominant). Digital photographs were cropped to remove hair and clothing and then presented to raters in random order on a computer screen. Measurements were made in duplicate by two independent research assistants blind to the testosterone status of the participants.
